Home runs in the top of the 12th inning by catcher Salvador Perez and third baseman Mike Moustakas led the Kansas City Royals to a 5 to 3 win over the Detroit Tigers in last night’s opener of a mid-week series down at Comerica Park.
The loss spoiled a solid outing from Justin Verlander, who struck out 9 – while allowing 3 runs and 5 hits while walking 2 – over 7 innings.
Drew Verhagan gave up both home runs and he took the loss.
Game 2 is tonight at Comerica Park.
Michael Fulmer will start for the Tigers and Danny Duffy goes to the mound for the Royals.
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10.
