Teemu Selanne scored to break a tie game early in the third period and the Anaheim Ducks added an empty net score to top the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in their playoff series opener last night.
Detroit’s only goal came from Daniel Cleary on a power play with just under four minutes left in the first period.
Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller made 21 saves. Jimmy Howard made 24 saves in a losing cause.
Game Two of the series is also at the Honda Center tomorrow night.
The Presidents’ Trophy-winning Chicago Blackhawks started off their Stanley Cup Playoff run with a 2-1 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild.
Bryan Bickell scored the game-winning goal in the extra session.
Minnesota was forced to use backup goal Josh Harding after Niklas Backstrom was injured during warmups.
The St. Louis Blues also won Game One of their series against the defending champion Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 in overtime.
