MLB – Tigers Beat Red Sox In Series Opener

Andy Dirks tripled in a run to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Boston Red Sox 3-0 in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park yesterday afternoon.

Prince Fielder also had an RBI for Detroit, who are now just a half-game behind Boston for the best record in the American League.

Doug Fister fired seven shutout innings as he improved to 12-and-7.

Jose Veras closed it out for his 21st save.


The two teams play game-two of their series tonight at Fenway Park. First pitch is 7:10 p.m.

Max Scherzer (19-1, 2.90 ERA) will take the mound for Detroit, up against Jon Lester (12-8, 3.99 ERA) of the Sox.
