Jon Lester outdueled Max Scherzer as the Boston Red Sox trimmed the Detroit Tigers 2-1 in the middle of a three-game series at Fenway Park last night.
Lester struck out nine over seven innings of one-run ball as he improved to 13-and-8.
Will Middlebrooks hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning for the Red Sox, who have won eight of their last 10.
Jose Iglesias doubled in the lone run for Detroit, who have lost two-of-three after winning three in-a-row.
Scherzer struck out eight in seven innings, but allowed both runs to fall to 19-and-2 in his second attempt at the 20-win mark.
The two teams will play the rubber match of their series tonight in Boston. First pitch at Fenway Park is 7:00 p.m.
Rick Porcello (11-7, 4.44 ERA) will take the mound for Detroit, up against Ryan Dempster (7-9, 4.75 ERA) of the Red Sox.
