Alex Avila lifted a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie and give the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park yesterday afternoon.
Avila also hit a two-run homer in the second for Detroit, who have won four-of-five.
Max Scherzer struck out 12 in seven innings of one-run ball for a no-decision.
Drew Smyly improved to 6-and-0 while Joaquin Benoit notched his 20th save.
The Tigers host the Mariners for four games starting tonight.
First pitch at Comerica Park is 7:08 p.m.
Rick Porcello (12-8, 4.56 ERA) will take the mound for Detroit, up against Joe Saunders (11-14, 5.18 ERA) of the Mariners.
