Despite a strong outing by Justin Verlander, the Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in extra innings last night in Minneapolis.
Verlander scattered six hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out 12.
Luke Putkonen was charged with the loss. He gave up the game winning hit in the bottom of the 11th.
Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez each had an RBI.
With the loss, Detroit’s magic number to clinch their third straight AL Central title remains at two.
Tonight, Doug Fister (13-9, 3.71 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers while the Twins counter with Scott Diamond (6-11, 5.54 ERA).
First pitch at Target Field is 8:10 p.m.
