Brad Richards had the only goal in the shootout to give the Red Wings a 5-4 win over the Sabres at Joe Louis Arena Tuesday night.
Justin Abdelkader tallied two goals and an assist for Detroit, which improved to 13-8-and-4.
The Red Wings gave up a game-tying score in the third period for the fifth straight game, then needed an Abdelkader goal to avoid losing in regulation.
Drew Miller scored his first goal of the season, and Tomas Tatar also scored.
The Red Wings host the Coyotes on Thursday.
