For the second straight year, the improbable happened at Sunday’s road course race.
Tony Stewart, who was virtually a non-factor since returning from a broken back and had started to become an afterthought in his final season as a NASCAR driver, suddenly is a winner again.
Stewart slammed his way past Denny Hamlin in the final turn of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 to snap an 84-race winless streak dating back to June 2013.
He thrust himself into playoff contention in his last hurrah.
Stewart is expected to retire after this NASCAR season.
