(MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN, October 22, 2019) In a historic first for Northern Michigan University, the Men’s Club Soccer Team has qualified for the Midwest Alliance Cup Championship tournament. The Midwest Alliance Cup (MAC) features collegiate club soccer teams from across the Midwest and will be played the weekend of October 26-27, 2019 at Grand Park just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana.
“After a tremendous season that saw our team go 6-2-2, we couldn’ t be more excited to qualify for the league championship tournament” said coach Philip Doherty. ” The lads work hard in practice, and have a great competitive spirit in matches that’s been rewarded with a wild-card birth in the tournament”.
The Midwest Alliance Cup is the championship tournament for the Midwest Alliance Soccer Conference which describes itself as “America’s premier men’s collegiate club soccer conference”. The conference features 50 teams from Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The MAC invites only 16 of the teams to participate in the championship tournament.
“We are really looking forward to representing NMU in this prestigious and competitive tournament” said Alec Kraushaar, President of the NMU Men’s Club Soccer team. ” Our club is all about providing a highly competitive environment for students wishing to continuing competitive soccer while they pursue degrees. We’ ve had a great regular season, and now, we’re part of the Sweet 16 in the Midwest Alliance Cup”.
Organized as a club team in 2001, NMU’s participation in the MAC this weekend will mark the first time the Wildcat’s club soccer team has appeared in the championship tournament. They begin group play with two games on Saturday,
October 26, 2019 with an 8 am match against the top-seeded University of Cincinnati. The Wildcats then take on Northwestern at 2 pm. The tournament continues on Sunday, October 27 with advancement depending on results from the first day of group play. The Wildcats are in Group A which also includes the University of Indiana.
