It looked like the Marquette Senior High School Redettes varsity basketball team was going to be heading into the locker room for one of those “this is what went wrong and this is how were going to fix it” speeches by the coaches. Luckily, the coach called a time out with just over a minute left in the first half and gave the speech early.
The Redettes came off the bench with a sense of urgency and a full court press. The defense was able to shut down the Maroons offense and limit them to two points while the offense went on the attack after a foul and misconduct call gave them four free throws and a possession. The Redettes made three out of four free throws, a three pointer and three buckets from inside the paint to close out the first half, up by four points (23-19).
The Redettes and Maroons came out swinging in the third quarter and neither team scored a point for the first 150 seconds. A foul on the Redettes and one of out two free throws made broke the scoreless streak. It looked like the Redettes were going to squeak out a victory when the Maroons made a three pointer at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into overtime. The Redettes dominated most of the overtime led by the solid offense and defense of Kat Angeli and Allison Supron. Angeli, despite having four fouls for most of the second half, scored six of her nine points in overtime.
The MSHS Redette JV team easily defeated the Menominee Maroons by a score of 51-30. The MSHS Redette varsity team defeated the Menominee Maroons in overtime by a score of 58-53.
