MARQUETTE – It’s another solid weekend of high school football in the central U.P. and Great Lakes Radio has you covered for all of the best action in the area. The Mid-Peninsula Conference is starting to shape out as many teams are still vying for an automatic bid into the playoffs.

Down at Miner’s Stadium in Negaunee it’s a rivalry on the gridiron that goes way back. The two schools are separated by just two miles. This season, the undefeated Hematites roll into town the favorites. With a win, Ishpeming will clinch a share of the MPC Title. When asked he might not admit it, but head coach Jeff Olson and his team have set it as a goal to finish this season unbeaten.

And with zero losses, comes as much home field advantage in the playoffs as you can ask for.

For the Miners, this game is about Negaunee pride. With still some home of bring home the MPC Championship at 4-3, The Miners need all the wins they can get. With tough action ahead against Marquette and Westwood on the way, it won’t be easy for Negaunee to sneak into the playoffs.

Picking up a win against a Rival might be the only ticket to the post-season.

You can follow all the action this Friday at Miner’s Stadium on UP Local Sports. Listen in to Sunny 101.9 WKQS for the Negaunee call, as Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson give you the Miner Perspective starting at 7 PM ET. Join Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau with the call for the Hematites on 98.3 WRUP.

After finding out that three of the four wins the Patriots have registered will be forfeited, they will be looking to respond in a tough mid-pen match up, as the 5-1 Norway Knights roll into Westwood to take on the 1-5 Patriots. In the final home game of the season, a young Patriot squad will be looking to continue success on the ground with Tyler Prophet, Nicolas Benda and Broc Lawry. The three combined put up monstrous rushing totals against the Inland Lakes Bulldogs last Saturday, and will look to execute a very similar game plan.

For the Knights, it’s all about running the football.

MPC leading rusher Bill Burkland averages 8 yards a carry and 130 yards per game. Norway quarterback Jalen Bal is fourth in the conference in total yards.

The battle in this ball game will be on defense. Both teams have struggled at times to stop the run and pass. With both running north and south, it could come down to turnovers or  time possession.

This Friday, you can catch all the action on 103.3 WFXD – Your home for Westwood Patriot sports. Pregame is set for 7 PM ET.
