Posted on October 8, 2008 in Manistique Emeralds.

Manistique, Mi. – The Manistique Emerald Netters were in action at home tonight against the visiting Negaunee Minors. The Minors having won the first match up looked to double up on the Emeralds in MPC action. The Negaunee squad got out of the gate first with a 25-13 set 1. The streaky Emeralds, coming off their first Mid Peninsula Conference victory over the Westwood Patriots, took sets 2 and 3 with tough serving led by Kristi Hyland. Other standouts in the first three included the net play of Holly Hueter, Melanie Neddow and some outstanding hitting by Malorie Lakosky. Set 4 ended the Manistique highlights as the Minors took over the match behind the setting of Kristina Mattson and middle play of Gabby Martin. The young Negaunee team finished off the match in game 5 with tough serving by Sarah MacDonald and the overall solid play of Charissa Johnson. After a hard fought losing effort, the Emerald Varsity goes to 1 and 8 in the MPC and 2 and 8 overall.

On the Junior Varsity level, the Manistique team dominated a Negaunee crew whose top two tenth graders had been moved up to the varsity. Millicent Weber shined as the Manistique Emeralds started slowly but came back stealing the momentum after going down 4 – 0. The match was over at this point and the Emeralds never looked back. The Minors surrendered quickly and without a struggle 25-13 and 25-10. Manistique’s JV squad moves its record up to 3 and 6 in the conference, and 4 and 6 overall. This win reverses a 6 match losing skid by the Emerald JVs.
