—M-L-B—Tigers gain another game.

The Detroit Tigers needed a 5-4 walk-off win to complete a four game sweep of the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park yesterday afternoon.

Starting pitcher Doug Fister didn’t figure in the decision, but he did set an American League record by striking out nine Royals in a row.

Fister left the game after seven and two-thirds innings after giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out 10. Detroit got the winning run in the bottom of the ninth when Alex Avila hit a bases loaded ground out to score Don Kelly.

Tonight, the Tigers open a three game series against the Twins in Minnesota. Drew Smyly will get the start in place of Max Scherzer, who was scratched with a shoulder issue. Game time is is 8:05 p.m.

The Tigers now have a two-game lead in the AL Central over the White Sox, who lost to the red hot Tampa Bay Rays last night 3 to 2.
