The Manistique Emeralds hopes of a district title came to a disappointing end here in Iron River Friday night. Despite a 42 yard punt return for a TD by senior Garde Kangas that gave the Emeralds a first quarter lead, they could not move the ball on offense and managed only one first down in the first half. A second quarter Wykons score and two point conversion left Manistique trailing 8 to 7 at half time.
In the second half, an Anders Broullire 21 yd feild goal with under 5 minutes to go seemed to be all the Emeralds would need for the title. But with under two minutes Manistique was forced to punt the ball back to the Wykons for the second time in 3:00 minutes, and a good return back to the Emerald 47 yard line set up the final score. With 1:02 left, a 25 yard pass and catch for a touchdown from B.J. Scalcucci to Adam Hibbard was all the Wykons needed for the district win.
Manistique finishes the season at 7 and 4. The Wykons (10-1) move on to play powerhouse Traverse City St. Fransis at the Superior Dome for the regional title next week.
