James McCann hit his fourth home run of the season in the ninth and Nick Castellanos and Yoenis Cespedes each had an RBI.
Detroit will try to salvage the final game of the series against Pittsburgh this afternoon.
Kyle Ryan gets the start for Detroit, while Pittsburgh will start Francisco Liriano.
