Mike Hoffman logged a power-play goal and an assist for Ottawa, who got goals from Chris Wideman and Bobby Ryan in the third to force OT.
Craig Anderson stopped 33 shots in the setback.
The Red Wings host the Capitals tomorrow night at the Joe.
