The Red Wings fell to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 at Wednesday night.
Brad Richards and Gustav Nyquist scored for Detroit.
Petr Mrazek returned to the net after missing Monday’s game against Dallas with a sore groin.
Mrazek turned aside 28 shots in the loss, which snapped the Wings three-game winning streak.
The Red Wings and Blackhawks play the second of a home-and-home series Sunday in Chicago.
Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill will be missing several players next training camp and preseason, but he doesn’t mind.
It’s further proof of the talent on his roster.
Seven Red Wings were named Wednesday to preliminary rosters of various World Cup teams:
Justin Abdelkader (USA), Pavel Datsyuk (Russia), Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall (Sweden), Petr Mrazek (Czech Republic), Dylan Larkin (North America) and Tomas Tatar (World).
Each squad was required to select 16 players now.
Full-23man rosters will be filled out at a later date, so more Red Wings could be selected.
The tournament runs from Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto.
It is the third World Cup, following events in 1996 (USA victory) and 2004 (Canada won).
Washington Capitals 3, Toronto Maple Leafs 2
Chicago Blackhawks 5, Detroit Red Wings 2
Anaheim Ducks 3, Montreal Canadiens 2 (SO)
