Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson has officially announced his retirement from the NFL.
In a statement Tuesday, the 30-year-old said it was not an easy or hasty decision and that he is truly at peace.
He also thanked the Ford family, his coaches, teammates and the fans.
Johnson, nicknamed Megatron, was drafted by Detroit as the second overall pick in 2007 out of Georgia Tech.
Over his nine year career he caught 731 passes for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns, all franchise records. He was also named to the Pro Bowl six times.
Johnson’s retirement will save the Lions over 11-million-dollars towards this year’s salary cap.
